Introduction to RBR pacenotes

First I want to make clear the difference between pacenotes and co-drivers since this generally causes confusion.

Co-driver mod: Co-driver is the voice/language you will hear but it also defines what calls are available and what is their type. Generally there are two different types: numeric (used for example in Dirt Rally) and descriptive (original RBR co-driver).

Pacenotes: Pacenotes define what your co-driver will read during stages, so they will not change the voice or type of the calls, that is defined by your co-driver as pointed above. Technically pacenotes are just ID numbers in ini file and co-driver mods translate those IDs into defined words. This means it doesn't matter if pacenotes are written by using numeric or descriptive co-driver as long as IDs are defined correctly by the creator of the co-driver mod.

What is Luppis pacenote pack?

Luppis pacenote pack is a pack of pacenote files made for hundreds of RBR stages with somewhat consistent scale to replace default pacenotes.

What is the difference between Luppis pacenote pack V2 and Luppis pacenote pack V3?

V2 and V3 refer to co-driver mod "standards" by Janne Laahanen. It's very simple in the end: V2 pack works with V2 co-drivers and V3 works with V3 co-drivers.

Notice!!! V3 pacenote pack is the recommended standard nowadays. Luppis pacenote pack V2 is not updated anymore!

Why one should use Luppis pacenote pack?

1. Consistency

RBR has hundreds of custom stages from different years and creators. Each stage/pacenote creator has their own pacenote scale. This means that default pacenotes can vary a lot between stages and it's hard to trust your notes when similar corners might have totally different calls in different stages. The pacenote pack aims to be as consistent as possible but variance and mistakes are possible!

2. Details

Default pacenotes are made compatible with RBR's original co-driver with very limited calls. This means that it can be hard to describe the road well enough when using default calls. Since Luppis pacenote pack is made with V2 and V3 co-drivers, it means that pacenotes can be really detailed.

3. Good practices

Some default notes might not follow general good practices of making pacenotes. This means that calls can be placed incorrectly or notes are missing for example distance calls. The core idea is to have calls placed correctly and calls are connected with distance or link calls. Even if one doesn't like Luppis pacenotes, the pack still offers a great base to create/edit your own pacenotes.

How Luppis pacenote pack works?

1. You need to have a compatible co-driver installed. As said earlier, V3 ones are recommended since it's newer standard and supports the active Luppis pacenote pack V3.

2. You need to install Luppis pacenote pack matching your co-drivers standard (V3 for V3 co-drivers and V2 for V2 co-drivers). Installing the pacenote pack is instructed below!

What else one should know?

1. Pacenotes are not perfect and there are some mistakes, especially in older V2 pacenotes. V3 pack is updated over the time to fix older notes.

2. Pacenotes are subjective matter (mostly). The scale of Luppis pacenote pack might not fit everyone or someone might dislike certain choice of calls. These pacenotes are made for myself to use so I tend to use my own style to make them. I'm still happy to receive constructive feedback and ideas what comes to making pacenotes since I'm not a professional by any means and I'm still learning the art of pacenotes.

Installation

1. Choose a compatible co-driver mod

The recommendation is V3 based co-driver mod as they support the maintained V3 pacenote pack.

V3: Currently V3 pack supports mods listed in here.

V2: The list of V2 pack compatible co-drivers can be found from here.

Using co-drivers with other structures or mixing V2 and V3 co-drivers/pacenotes is not recommended. Using incompatible co-driver might lead into missing or false calls! 

2. Download matching Luppis pacenote pack

For V3 co-drivers: Download the Luppis pacenote pack V3. 

For V2 co-drivers: Download the Luppis pacenote pack V2.

Before downloading you need to choose if you want to install the complete pack or single pacenote files!

Complete pack: Choose ALL PACENOTES > PACENOTES WITH FOLDER STRUCTURE and download the Plugins folder. Move to step 3.1 for installing complete pack.

Single pacenote files: Choose ALL PACENOTES > PACENOTES WITHOUT FOLDER STRUCTURE and download files you want. Move to step 3.2 for installing single files.

NOTICE!!! Make sure to download from the correct folder level as instructed above to avoid potential network errors during the Dropbox's packing process.

3. Installing Luppis pacenote pack

No matter if you selected V3 co-driver and pacenote pack or V2 co-driver and pacenote pack, these same installation instructions for pacenotes apply for both. Point 3.1 shows installation for the complete pack using folder structure method and 3.2 shows installation for single files with two different methods.

3.1 Complete pack installation (Folder structure method)

In case you chose to download the complete pack, you should now have a file called PACENOTES WITH FOLDER STRUCTURE.zip or Plugins.zip that contains the complete pack.

1. Open the PACENOTES WITH FOLDER STRUCTURE.zip or Plugins.zip in Windows' file explorer and copy the Plugins folder

2. Navigate to your RBR folder (e.g. C:\Games\Richard Burns Rally) and paste Plugins folder there. Replace old existing files if asked.

Now pacenotes should be automatically in use for each stage. If some notes do not load automatically when entering the stage then do following:

1. Open RallySimFans launcher and tab called "My Pacenotes"

2. Make sure you have enabled "Use MyPacenotes" on top

2. Click stage where you want to use my pacenotes and then from the right side box (Available pacenotes) choose "latest MyPacenote".

Repeat this step with other stages if needed. (NOTE: if you already have own pacenotes with modified date newer than mine then you should click Luppis pacenote file in "MyPacenotes" screen to use it)

3.2 Single pacenote file installation

If you decided to download individual pacenote (.ini) files then you have two different options to apply them. Method 1 is done in game and Method 2 by using Windows' file explorer and RallySimFans launcher.

Method 1.

 1. Extract or copy pacenote files from the zip folder you downloaded and paste them to where ever you want

 2. Enter a stage in RBR and double left click to open pacenote plugin

 3. Choose "File" -> "Read from BTB" and then find the location where you pasted your pacenote files

 4. Choose the correct pacenote file, click OK and that's all

Method 2.

 1. Copy pacenote files to matching stage folders in RBR/Plugins/NGPCarMenu/MyPacenotes (you need to drive the stage once to make stage folder appear)

 2. Each file goes to own folder (e.g. "Bisanne LuppisV3" file to "Bisanne" folder and so on)

 3. Open RallySimFans launcher and the tab called "My Pacenotes"

 4. Click stage where you want to use my pacenotes and then from the right side box (Available pacenotes) choose "latest MyPacenote".

4. Updating Luppis pacenote pack V3

As we get new stages very often it means that I also make new pacenotes and also update older pacenotes. You might have seen that only the Luppis pacenote pack V3 for V3 co-drivers is maintained nowadays, while V2 pack hasn't received any updates after 4.6.2024. Updates for V3 pack are available as separate update packs so you don't need to download all the notes multiple times or search single stages from the complete list. These are also split into subfolders to differentiate pacenotes for new stages (NEW PACENOTES folder) and pacenotes to update existing pacenote files (UPDATED PACENOTES).

I will announce updates on RallySimFans Discord in #community-news channel and #codrivers-notes forum post. Usually updates will come within a month after the release of new stages and sometimes I might post updates for older stages randomly. It all depends on how I have time besides family, work and other personal life.

Following steps will explain how you can update your pacenotes by using update packs.

1. Open "UPDATE PACKS" in Dropbox

2. Choose the update pack you want to download. Update packs are named after their release date in YYY-MM-DD format.

3. As said above, new and updated notes are split into their own sub folders (NEW PACENOTES and UPDATED PACENOTES) so you can only download notes for new stages or download both new and updated pacenotes if you wish. So now select one of these and repeat this for the other one after step 5, in case you want both.

4. Next either choose the PACENOTES WITH FOLDER STRUCTURE to download and install the complete update pack or PACENOTES WITHOUT FOLDER STRUCTURE for single pacenotes files.

5. Installing updates can be done the same way as installing the pack. So in case you want to install complete update (PACENOTES WITH FOLDER STRUCTURE) follow the point 3.1. above or 3.2. for single files (PACENOTES WITHOUT FOLDER STRUCTURE). If you want to install pacenotes for both, new and updated stages then repeat from the step 3 for the other one.
